Twelve Assertions About “God:”
1. God is an old, bearded Man who created the World in six days as described in the Bible.
2. No, God can assume any appearance: a man, a burning bush, a fiery finger that writes in stone.
3. God led an army to conquer Canaan; and/or an army to conquer Arabia for Islam.
4. No, God is a creative force, never destructive. Wars are made by men.
5. God listens to individual humans and helps them.
6. No, God does not attend to individual lives. God set the Cosmos in motion, and God lets it run (emerge and evolve).
7. God in all three Abrahamic Religions is called Yahweh (in Judaism), Allah (in Islam), and simply God (in Christianity). The English word God comes from the Old English god, which itself is derived from the Proto-Germanic *gudą. Its cognates [has the same derivation as] in other Germanic languages include guþ, gudis (both Gothic), guð (Old Norse), god (Old SaxonOld Frisian, and Old Dutch), and got (Old High German).
8. No, if God exists, He, She, or It has no name.
9. Brahman (in Hinduism) is not a “God.” It is the “Highest Universal Principle; Ultimate Reality.”
10. The Tao (in Taoism) is the “Natural Way of the universe;” its “underlying natural order.”
11. Buddhism has no God. Individual people can attain Enlightenment, by right-living.
(Note: We can never know whether or not God exists, because we cannot prove a negative. To prove a negative, we would have to possess all the knowledge of the Cosmos, and we do not. But others argue that “for all practical purposes,” God does not exist.)
12. My own spiritual Path, “Nature’s Path of Continuing Creation” substantially agrees with #6, #8, #9, & #10 above, but we have much more scientific knowledge to back it up than we did 100 years ago.
